We flew from Bali to Langkawi Malaysia and got to our hotel at 7 pm.  We checked in to our hotel then went for a little walk around the town.  On the way back Isabel and I went to the beach to check it out.

This is our last full day in Bali and it has been thoroughly enjoyable, the majority of the food has been excellent the apartment we rented quiet and comfortable and the people very friendly.  Even the sandwich that we suspect made Evy sick was described as heavenly after her first bite.  We felt safe going for a walk at night, not something that we would do in most of the other countries that we have visited to date.   For our last day we decided to go for a ride to the Kintamani Volcano and Lake Batur which is supposed to be one of the places to see in Bali.  I thought the view was nice but definitely not one of the places I would return to.  Just to get into the village cost $9 with the restaurant we ate at being one of the most expensive we have eaten at in Bali with the poorest quality of cooking.  It would have cost $50 to enter the hot springs so we skipped them.  I have come to the conclusion that anyone that home schools their kids when there are perfectly good schools available to them must be crazy.  I know that tying to teach my kids is driving me crazy and I no longer think that I am smarter than a 5^th grader.

We enjoyed another hot sunny day at White Sand Beach.  I had the intention of snorkeling but the ocean was too rough to allow for enjoyable snorkeling.  We played in the waves and really enjoyed them especially David.  When the waves started to get a bit smaller I decided it was safe to take Isabel a little bit deeper.  We were in the water for at least 30 minutes with no problems, when Isabel said “look out daddy”.  I turned towards the ocean just in time to see a massive wave bearing down on us.  Isabel was hanging onto my back so I yelled at her to get into my arms.  We tried to go under the wave but the trough in front of it was only slightly above the bottom of the ocean.  The wave tumbled Isabel and I like rag dolls, we got through the first wave ok and I stood up to get my bearings only to see a second massive wave about to hit us.  Again we were rolled along the bottom of the ocean with Isabel wrapped in my arms.  Again we made it through with no problems. Again I stood up to get my bearing only to see a third wave about to hit us.  The third wave ripped Isabel out of my arms on the second or third roll and I barely managed to grab her bathing suit to hold onto her under the wave.  When it was over I was relieved to see David safely on the shore looking at us.  Everybody that was around us also seemed to be looking for the people that they were with and there were a lot of stunned looking expressions on their faces.  There were a few large waves after that but none quite a large as those 3 and I did not have Isabel hanging onto me.  We had another lovely beach lunch and Isabel constructed a sand castle with her new pail set.

We had arranged for Podole the driver we have been using since arriving in Bali to pick us up at 10 am and we had plans to return to Amed for more snorkeling. Podole showed up at 9 am and said he needed to talk to me.  It turns out that he had sold his car that morning and could not drive us.  He was going to call a friend to take us where we needed to go that day. Evy was not feeling the best we decided to have another do nothing day.

Evy continued to be sick most of the day and finally started to eat something in the night.  For the kids and me there was plenty of tablet time with a bit of swimming.  I went for a fairly long walk but cut it short when it started to rain.  During the walk I saw several skinks and was almost bit by an aggressive dog.

Evy was feeling quite ill the majority of the day and was still throwing up late into the night.  I did school work with the kids. There was lots of tablet time with me reading and the kids playing games and reading.  In the evening we abandon Evy and went to the resort next door for supper where the three of us had fillet mignon with mushroom sauce.  Isabel had a good day with two firsts for her.  She finally got up the courage to hold a crab which we caught on the beach and to hold a lizard which we caught in the street.

We started going to Amed to do some snorkeling and were 1/3 of the way there when Isabel started to get cramps.  We made an emergency stop at a gas station washroom then turned around and went back to the apartment.  Evy stayed with Isabel while David and I went snorkeling at Blue Lagoon.   There were lots of people snorkeling there and I did not really understand why there were so many scuba divers there.  White Sands would be a much nicer place to scuba dive as there are a fair number of corals and they are quite a bit deeper and did not seem to be as damaged.  We saw a few eels and and lots of other fish, with Davids favorite being a small stone fish.  I did not see the stone fish until David pointed it out to me and it still took me a while to locate it.  When we got back from snorkeling the four of us went across the street to eat lunch.  Isabel was feeling better by then and was able to enjoy the restaurant pool along with her brother.  David and I went for a walk to look for fireworks when we left the restaurant.  We purchased 4 roman candles with 8 shots each for 100 k idr ($10.00).  In the evening we went for a walk to see if we could find more fireworks. We ended up purchasing some spinners and a large roman candle.  Our apartment is 100 meters away from where the majority of the town meets to shoot off fireworks at midnight.  It was so different than anything I have seen in Canada.  There were 100s of people lighting small fireworks up and down the coast for as far as I could see.  There were fireworks going off constantly for at least 20 minutes with a concentration at midnight.  During the night Evy started throwing up and had diarrhea,  the first case of serious food poisoning on the trip.  I am pretty sure it was from what we ate at lunch as that was the only time that we ate different food.
